Author: Michael Cordonnier/Soybean & Corn Advisor, Inc.

Rainfall last week was fairly widespread in Brazil which led to some improvement in soil moisture for the safrinha corn, but dryness is still a concern. Rainfall is expected to be heaviest across southern and northwestern Brazil over the next 15 days.

Brazil's soybeans were 81% harvested late last week compared to 73% last year and 79% average according to Patria AgroNegocios. This represents an advance of 4% for the week. The harvest in central Brazil is winding down with the major areas left to harvest in far southern and far northern Brazil.

The last major state to harvest is Rio Grande do Sul where the soybeans were 25% harvested as of late last week. Yields in the state are expected to be down 30% or more due to hot and dry conditions in January and February. Emater is currently estimating statewide soybean yield at 37.3 sacks per hectare (33.7 bu/ac).
